Jews for Saints

Posted by Simon

Now that the Chargers have lost we need a new team for the playoffs.  In LA we are not constrained by having a hometeam.  I wanted to be a New Orleans fan but it required finding out if it was OK for Jews to love Saints.  A google search showed no results for “Jews love Saints”.  I may be at the front of another movement.  I predict The New Orleans Saints will win the Super Bowl by 10 plus points and Reggie Bush will be the MVP.  Write it down.

Road Trip

Posted by Simon

Rebecca and I drove in her Mini from LA to Dallas.  From Dallas I flew home and Rebecca and Nurit finished the trip to Philadelphia.  These are some impressions of the trip:

  • Frank M’s Risotto
  • The loss of our beloved Chargers
  • Border Marker #1
  • A Texas ice storm between Midland and Abilene
  • Ice in Texas

  • The “Worlds Best” Fried Mozzarella  at Buffalo Hot Wings in Abilene.

What a great country and most of it is still empty.

LA with Beckham

Posted by Simon

Soccer Superstar David Beckham is coming to the Galaxy in LA.  Here is the AP story

Beckham.jpg

The analogy that this story reminds me of is in the 1960′s when Japanese car companies started selling cars in California.  Detroit said in effect it’s only California not to worry.  Forty years later that seems like a bad call.  The analogy is to the NFL, which has not had a team in the second biggest market in the country for more than a decade.  LA does have a Pro Soccer Team and now it has Beckham the biggest draw in soccer.  Football is the most popular sport in the USA but that it will stay that way is not guaranteed.  If the NFL doesn’t recapture this market soon soccer will gain an unassailable foothold in the USA in the same way that the Japanese car companies did.

Offensive Humor

What do you get when you cross a Jehovah’s Witness with a Unitarian?

Somebody who goes from door-to-door for no reason.

I found this joke in P. J. O’Rourke’s new book On The Wealth of Nation. It is an excellent synopsis and interpretation of Adam Smith’s Tome.  O’Rourke writes in a humorously expository style that makes even the dense writing of someone like Smith understandable and relevant.

Yosemite Web Cam

Posted by Simon

This link will take you to the Sentinel Dome Web Cam. It is a live camera on Sentinel Dome showing a shot of down to Half Dome. You can see a High Sierra sunrise every day.
It is what I want to do with the Pond Cam. All I am lacking now are the technical competence, the equipment and the time.

Yosemite is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the world. The stories about it being overcrowded are just stories. Most of the valley and all of the high country are wonderfully uncrowded and naturally beautful. We try to go every year.

A Better Razor

Posted by Simon

This product was invented by my friend Gary David.  I built the prototype for him in my laboratory.  He is in the process of patenting it.

The idea is to be able to have better control of the blade on your face while shaving by eliminating the handle from the razor. Rub your finger on your face in a shaving motion and you’ll see why this idea will work. It will be 100% disposable and excellent for travel.

It’s impact on global warming will be lower than electric razors (naturally) and handled razors because of lower transportation and manufacturing impacts.

Excellent control.

The one finger prototype worked very well. The next experiment is with a two finger model. Good invention Gary!

If your are interested in licensing this invention you can contact Gary through this web site I’ll forward it to him.
