The Basic Principle of Holiday Feasting

“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used
up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride!”
Why I don’t buy the NYT

“Rather than set a democratic example, our president has instead served as a model of unconstitutional behavior, eagerly emulated by his Pakistani acolyte.”
Frank Rich, New York Times Columnist, November 11, 2007
Comparing George W Bush unfavorably to Pervez Musharref crosses a line for me.
Rich has a right to say stuff like this and the NYT has the right to print it. But I won’t give my money to them to encourage it and apparently lots of others won’t either. The NYT circulation is below one million for the first time since the 1950′s.
Pond Improvement

The teak bench that used to live by the back door moved some time ago to the lawn by the pond. Lillian had suggested that I should build an alcove for it behind the pond. I’d never gotten to it done partly because I was skeptical about how it would look.
As you can see it looks great. And the view from the bench is excellent.
From the bench you can see all of the falls in the stream and even better hear them. Thanks Lillian for the improvement suggestion.

Two years ago we planted a row of dwarf citrus trees behind the swimming pool. At the same time we moved two of our three existing citrus trees around. This year we are having a bumper crop of Satsumo Tangerines.
Life is good. When I was growing up in Olean, NY and Gloucester, England it was a special treat to have a tangerine. Now we grow them in the yard. They are delicious and we have so many that we give them away.
Obesity Helps the Planet

You may see fat people but I see people who care about the environment.
We are all be concerned about too much carbon dioxide causing global warming but how many of us are doing something about it? People who put on a few extra pounds make look bad to you but to Al Gore and I they look “caring.” Why? Because those extra pounds contain carbon that reduce their carbon footprint and make the world a cooler place for all of us.
Thank you fat people for caring about the environment. One day I hope to be as committed as you to saving the planet.

This is one of those good ideas that we all wish we had had ourselves:
The Jewish Google
Thanks to Paul D for this link.
It is just a small step to creating all kinds organization or group specific ___gles.
For instance: Armygle. No matter what you search for the answer is more weapons.
Leftgle. No matter what you search for it’s George Bush’s fault.
And the ethnic possibilities… it is better not to go there.

Global Warming Menorah
Posted by Simon
Global warming is a concern for many Jews and yet at Hanukkah millions of Jews light millions of candles. This ritual burning contributes vast amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
Now there is an alternative. Melt you Menorah. Use icicles or ice cubes instead of candles. Here is a picture of a prototype:
A Global Warming Menorah
As the ice melts you can consider the fate of our planet if we don’t improve our stewardship.
Show your concern for the environment.
Don’t contribute to global warming.
We do need some new blessing.
Happy Hanukkah!
Arizona Sunset

I love this picture Nurit took of a sunset while we were driving back across Arizona from Santa Fe to Pasadena.
My picture though technically better does not even come close to capturing the road-trip driving experience the way Nurit’s does.
Driving the interstates is really about great scenic beauty and Mc Donalds.
