Cleo Street Barge

Posted by Simon

My brother in law Joel G is an active Southern California Diver and is trying to get some movement going about sinking some more boats of the California coast.  You can visit the Cleostreetbarge.com web site.

One of the ideas he is running with is having a mass descension as a fund raiser.  This was an idea that first appeared on Swcamborne last October.  It is an excellent idea and we should be able to set a record for the most divers descending at once.

What is the Problem?

Posted by Simon

Last year eight million people moved from one state to another in the USA. We accept that as the way things are and adjust. But a half million people move here from Mexico and we get so mad we can’t see straight. For my thoughts on why this is the case read my article “What is the Problem?” on RadicalImmigration.com

St. Luke’s Hospital

Posted by Simon

The former St. Luke’s hospital building is on Washington Blvd. in Pasadena near our Temple.

P2100093.JPG

It closed about a decade ago as hospitals consolidated and the communities needs changed. It was bought by Caltech and was going to be an expanded research facility but they couldn’t get any of their professors to move there. They resold it a year or two ago to a developer. Our local Jewish community needs a retirement home. I’m going to approach the developer and see if he would be interested in leasing a couple of floors or a wing for that purpose.

Nothing ventured nothing lost!

Backyard Birds 2

A flock of small yellow birds on the tree in the front yard.

A bad photo of a hawk who came to the stream to drink. I had to take the photo through the window with the digital zoom.

Backyard Birds

Posted by Simon

I got a new remote for my digital camera (Olympus Stylus 800) and have been taking some bird photos to try it out.

As a result of getting the remote I had to learn how to use it and ended up learning about two other features the digital zoom, and the super high quality photos.

I felt pretty stupid about not knowing how to use these two features before. But then I remembered that life is a process of continual improvement.

CSULA

Posted by Simon

I spoke last night to an Advanced Advertising Class at CSULA, my alma mater. The professor is an old friend Olga DiFranco. The students were very bright and engaged. Since these were seniors I spoke to them about how to get a job. I told the story of Frank Espinoza, associating with the group that you want to join, the importance of choosing the right company and industry and about the use of the ten links.  I of course was brilliant and the students lives were changed forever by my insights.  Or not.

During the question period I was asked about how to get a new business idea funded. I mentioned Pasadena Angels and said the link was on my site. Now it is:

http://www.pasadenaangels.com/

I have also added it to my links list.  It is an excellent organization.  Another place for a budding entrepreneur to get help is SCORE (The Service Corps of Retired Executives)

A New Word Usage

I asked to be removed from an email list and received  this reply:

“Thank you for your unsubscribe request, it has been actioned.”

I believe actioned” is a new verb form.

Long Beach Aquarium

Posted by Simon

Nurit and I went to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach on the train. We took the Metro gold line from Pasadena to LA. Then the red line to 7th street and the blue line to Long Beach. It was fairly easy and only took about twice as long as driving.

We ate lunch at Bubba Gumps Seafood and took a quick tour of the Aquarium. If I hadn’t been to The Monterey Bay Aquarium I would have thought it was excellent. But it pales by comparison. It is mostly set up for school group tour with lots of videos, well chaperoned touch pools and interactive displays.

This is a sea horse

They had the best sea horse display I have ever seen in an aquarium.

The best part was spending a day with Nurit exploring around LA.
