Work for the Old
Posted by Simon
Since the pyramid of wealth is collapsing a lot of people who thought they could retire are having to think about working in the golden years. Lots of us will be looking for work and Walmart can only hire so many part-time workers. What will all of the other old people do? How about jobs in industries that are dangerous if you do them for along time. Jobs in industries like tobacco, asbestos, semiconductors and lead processing. Running x-ray machine and cleaning up toxic waste are other examples of jobs that in which long term exposure will have a cumulative negative effect. If however you start the job at age 65 there are not enough years of exposure left to be dangerous. Old age diseases like heart or cancer will kill you long before the cumulative effect of working with lead.
So old people can do the cumulative danger jobs, save young people from the exposure danger and make enough money to live for a few more years. A nice example of creative symbiosis.

Thanks to Gene B. for reminding me of this one.
“You’re probably used to women walking away from you”
Bigs Eggert
Manager Altantis Resort Dumaguete
“We’ve got people.”
An oft repeated quote about the excellent service at the Atlantis Resorts.
Blatantly stolen from H & R Block commercials.
“In your dreams.”
Howard G. reminded me of this quote. It was first delivered perfectly on the flight to Manila and was then repeated in many inappropriate circumstances for the next two weeks.

Communication

This is a true statement. But if you put it in the middle of a large collection of other pithy sayings…
You are not exactly demonstrating an ability to communicate. All of these sayings, many of which are quite good, are lost in the noise of this busy bulletin board full of sayings.

The book Kings of Capital and Knights of Labor
Was printed in 1886. The Preface begins:
What are these three dangers? They might sound familiar:
- “Political Corruption in our legislatures and municipalities”
- “Social Dangers,” specifically “Capital and Labor are in open war.”
- and “the Evils of enormous fortunes in the hands of the few.”
The premise of this book was wrong. We have not found remedies to any of these “dangers” but we have not perished. We have thrived. In the 130 years since Kings of Capital and Knights of Labor was published our nation has created wealth and opportunity beyond imagination. Maybe he was wrong to worry about these issues then and maybe we are wrong to spend to much time worrying about them now.
Politicians are still corruptible. The owners and the workers are still fighting, and people are still worrying about the concentration of wealth in society. Managing these conditions so that the creative engine of growth can continue to increase prosperity throughout the world is our task. There are no remedies, only management problems.
Life is good!

Diving in the Philippines 1

This is the first of a series of entries about the Codger Divers trip to the Philippines. It was a great group of five codgers on the trip. We took between us about 1000 pictures some of which are bound to be postworthy. We went to the Cock Fights, which are legal in the Philippines. We had an adventure, a sarong night and some great diving. We met some wonderful people. We learned some political and personal lessons and we made it back alive. These pictures will whet your appetite.
