Vicodin
Posted by Simon
Vicodin makes you stupid. It it a wonderful painkiller, but it makes you act stupid. It slows your reaction times and impairs your ability to consider alternatives. The warning says don’t drive while using the drug. There is a reason.
If you ever want to know why some people are really bad drivers try driving on Vicodin. Now think about those bad drivers out there who miss traffic light, forget to signal, change lanes without looking etc. They are either stupid or on Vicodin. Don’t be angry at them. Feel sorry for them.
Bluebirds in Pasadena
Posted by Simon
My neighbor, Marta J, saw a Western Bluebird down by the Eaton Canyon golf course. Her friends doubted her. So she “found” a web site that proved she was correct: Birding in Pasadena http://www.birdinginpasadena.com/
Click on the link to understand why I found this to be wonderfully clever and humorous.
Teaser photo, not bluebirds
But we have to ask is it in Wickopedia? Yet. I am going to start walking down that way to try and confirm her sighting.

Swarming

I got a nice picture today of a flock of bee swarming.
They were on a Palo Verde tree just off the Mount Wilson Toll Road almost at Henninger Flats. The noise of thousands of bees buzzing is amazing.
More pictures from this very nice hike.
Why I Blog
Posted by Simon
On the way back from Santa Fe last month I dismissed writing letters to the editor with the old laugh line “writing letter to the editor is the first sign of senility.” My friend replied “I thought blogging was the first sign of senility?” She then made the very sensible argument that the act of putting your thoughts on a subject into 300 words so that it could be printed in the paper was a great way to get clarity. Her comment got me thinking about why I blog.
I started my blog in January of 2006 about three and a half years and 900 entries ago. I didn’t keep any notes of my original intent but I think I started it:
- To practice writing
- To stay current with the technology
- And to share my ideas.
It has become an electronic version of going to the pub and having a rant, a laugh, a joke or telling a story. It allows me to stay in touch with my groups, avoid writing a book and daydream about thousands of daily readers. Thinking about my blog entries effects my behavior. I always have my camera with me. When I am hiking or driving or sitting I see thing as they would appear on my blog.
So why do I keep my blog going?
- It is great fun
- It causes me to see the good, the interesting and the quirky
- The nearly daily exercise causes me to clarify my thoughts on whatever subject I try.
To paraphrase Decarte:
I Blog therefore I am.
Santa Fe January 2009

While posting the pictures from our trip last month to Santa Fe I discovered that I had never finished the pictures from our trip there in January cheating you out of a short vicarious vacation.
Here is my favorite picture of the set:
It was sunny in Santa Fe in January. It is drizzling in Pasadena in June.
Click here to see the entire set of sun and snow pictures.
Some nice sunny pictures could cheer you up.
Free Ranging Rocks
Posted by Simon
There are two kinds of rocks in the world: “Free Ranging” and “Caged.”
This picture illustrates the point nicely. the large boulder and small rocks along the petunias in the foreground are free ranging the stones cemented into the walls are caged. You can see that the free ranging stones are happier. Is it stone torture? Read the rest of this entry »
Nurit’s Birthday
Posted by Simon
We had a very good party for Nurit’s “significant” birthday back at the beginning of May. I’m finally getting around to posting about it. Time flies when you’re having fun …or not.
The theme was 60′s Music
and Leo Lerma had a great playlist

Lillian organized a wine tasting:
Which had the unintended benefit of getting us to take pictures of most of the guests:
Including these two handsome gentlemen.
Katie D. Made a wonderful cake:
The excellent catering was by the Kitchen for Exploring Food in Pasadena:
It was a pretty special evening:
