The Station Fire
Posted by Simon
If you are looking for information on the Station Fire here are a few resources you can try:
My Blog about reopening the Mount Wilson Toll Road has a few pictures and my claim to prescience.
The Altadena Blog has very timely information about the fire
The Mt Wilson Towercam has real-time pictures of the Summit of Mt Wilson
And the LA Times site has Maps and Photos that are only a few hours out of date
We feel pretty safe here in Sierra Madre Villa. The wind is low, the fire is at least five miles away uphill and the fire fighting resources are well organized to save structures. It is smoky, the sky color is eerie and the noise of the fire plane and helicopters creates a sense of urgency but we are safe. The television news exacerbates the sense of drama and urgency. We have friends in La Canada who were evacuated but they are now back home and everything is fine.
Gold Line Public Art
Posted by Simon
I went on a “Beta Tour” of Public Art on the Gold Line with Michael Several last Saturday. The Gold Line is a grade level light rail that runs from Union Station NE to Pasadena about 15 miles. It follows the right-of-way of the old Santa Fe Railway. A small percentage of the construction cost of each station was set aside for public art. Some of it was used for ornate fences and benches, some for murals and some for statues. There were about a ozen people on the tour and it was excellent.
I’ve just posted a few pictures here to whet your appetite. To see more visit my album on Flickr or even better take the Gold Line and get off at every station. We started our tour at the Del Mar Station:

Wildfire Positive
Posted by Simon
We have wildfires burning about five miles west of us and about ten miles east. The smoke is a bit irritating. It remind me of the smell of Bangkok. But there is a positive: The sunrises are spectacular.
Looking east at 6 am from the backyard
Looking north toward Henninger Flats
Of course I didn’t enjoy the spectacular sunrises as much last spring when the fire in Sierra Madre was only a mile or two away.
