Two Bridge Day
Posted by Simon
One of the most famous bridges in the world is the Golden Gate Bridge:
On the same day that we crossed it we saw one of the worlds least famous bridges. This one lane bridge in Monterey County, CA near Greenfield.
Small steel strut bridges are an endangered species. Fortunately Rebecca is working on saving some of them in Oregon. It is odd that thing have to get rare before they are worth saving.
Emerging Artist

Andrea Perusquia is a very talented young artist in the Phoenix area. I am lucky enough to have bought some of her sketches recently:
She also does some amazing oils and I’m hoping to buy one of them soon:
You can see more of her paintings:
- in my flickr album
- On her web site
- or in person at the Tempe Public library
Medical? Marijuana
Posted by Simon
A few weeks ago in the Orange County Weekly there was an advertising insert for the Medical Marijuana industry.
It included lots of advertising for clinics and dispensaries.
And this special listing of suppliers that make home delivieries:
I think the Rolling Paper is a great idea it provides people with data on suppliers and suppliers with customers. My only issue is that it is getting a little crowded under the umbrella of “Medical” Marijuana. Prop 19 didn’t pass in the last election cycle but the people who got it on the ballot are back with a new initiative cleverly titled: Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol
The OC Weekly is also the original home of Ask A Mexican by Gustavo Arellano one of the funnier writers on the planet.
I’m filing this under Nanny State because the Marijuana prohibition is an example of Nanny State-ism from the right.
A New Tax We Can Agree On.
Posted by Simon
Liberals want to raise taxes on the “rich” to balance the budget and keep spending.
Conservatives want the government to balance the budget by “cutting services for other but not for me.”
I propose that we have a new entertainment tax on media companies. Lets make it one percent of all revenue at all media companies. Cable companies, sports teams, TV, radio, video games, magazines, newspapers and movies. Since most of these companies are run by liberals they won’t object to this new luxury tax.
Of course if they do object they will be exposed as hypocrites. It seems like a win-win for the taxpayers.
btw After we get done with this failed idea we will have still have to have entitlement reform. The future growth of Medicare and Social Security has to be constrained. Anybody that tells you differently is drinking the koolaid.

The Spoon and the Pot
Posted by Simon
I heard a member of the Mexican Congress speak recently and he used a Mexican folk proverb to explain how the government works. It translates roughly:
“The spoon is the same as the pot”
Which I took to mean that the “spoon” (politicians) are a the same as the “pot” (population).
I think that the same thing applies around the world. At least it does here in the USA.
